The Cyberjet/G2 Love Thread

Post by Urluck » Tue Feb 06, 2018 9:25 am

Righty, here's another topic to feed this fledgling forum....

Now, when you hear the words "Generation 2", what do you think of? If your answer is along the lines of "marmite colour schemes" or "the thing immediately before Beast Wars saved the franchise", congratulations, you have a point, but you are also victim to one of the great tragedies of the Transformers fanbase. Generation 2 did indeed feature a lot of G1 toys recoloured in a clashing fashion, and it didn't sell too well. But that's not all it did. You know how Transformers have articulation as stanadard? G2 did that. Lightpiping? Also G2. Once G2 got into making its own moulds, we got a bunch of toys that were still reissued a decade or more later, and still matching modern products. While Beast Wars set the standards for writing and animal transformers, G2 set the standard for vehicular transformers.

Today, I would like to single out the multi-faction group called the Cyberjets as the most enduringly good toys from that line. And I would like to do so in such a convincing manner that when someone says "G2", you think "oh, the Cyberjets were pretty cool". Now, imagine a modern legends toy. It has light-piping. It has upwards of 8 balljoints in it, so it poses like a boss. It transforms into a jet, in a manner more clean and pleasing than many jetformers since, and far larger. They even had landing gear. It also features a third gimmick, pressure missiles, and if you feel that's a bit meh, the toys can also weild them as clubs, with tabs to store them. The only regret is that they only did 3 moulds, then many repaints, although the Dreadwing/Smokescreen is definately the same goodness writ large.

So a legends class jetformer, made of balljoints, lightpiped, has landing gear, with missiles it can beat people with. Not convinced? Well, here's some pictures.

First off: Hooligan. If you like the G2 approach to colour, and you do you, this is the one you want. Best overall mould, in tiger stripes.

He also got some kicking recolours, like this Jetfire-inspired one. Note: Swing-wings, and inexplicable chromed gun.

Then there's Strafe, and you may recognise the transformation as the deluxe sized smokescreen toy mentioned above.

Skyjack. The weakest mould, but a stealth bomber with a flames paintjob is awesome.

And here's my regrettably limited collection so far.

If you like small Transformers, and don't own one of these, I'd suggest you take a look at the wiki page, and go hunting.

Wow, that was more of an essay than a post. Discuss?

God, I'm not wholly familiar with G2 but I just love that someone in the design team went "you know what the Transformers have been lacking all these years? N E O N". And then they made it happen, with a vengeance.

He is nice. If you released him today, with a modern paint job, he'd be declared best in show.

My dream figure is the Generations leader toy done in the G2 colors with a new mask to make the G2 face.
