Giant Monsters!

Post by Baltan » Thu Feb 08, 2018 9:42 pm

Generally you people are here out of a love for giant robots and there’s nothing wrong with that! However, there’s other franchises and films to enjoy too (crazy, I know) and giant monsters just so happen to be one of my biggest passions.

How about any of you? Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, hell even Gorgo and Reptilicus if you must.

I'm also big on the Godzilla, along with rider and sentai.
Howdy homies.

Excellent! We’ve got... one in here.

Here’s the age-old question: favorite monster?

A huge influence on my life, from watching the old Godzilla cartoon as a child, waiting up until 3am to watch "Creature Features" on Channel 4 until now, where I've seen 32 Godzilla films, Rodan, Mothra 1+2 and a single Gamera film. I don't count the 1998 "Godzilla" film as an entry, not being elitist, it doesn't have the same kind of atmosphere as Showa/Heisei/Millennium films for me, something the 2014 film absolutely nailed. My favourite monsters are King Ghidorah, Destoroyah and Heisei Godzilla. I dream that one day there'll be a Pacific Rim vs Godzilla film.

I'd have to say Godzilla holds a special place in my heart. When I graduated from Pre-K my parents got me a remote controlled Godzilla toy from the 98 film. I haven't seen that many but it was awesome watching the 2014 film and Shin Godzilla on the big screen. I've also enjoyed Pacific Rim and I'm eagerly antcipating the next film. Also I know this is a bit of an outlier but I liked the first Cloverfield movie. It provides something of a different perspective. I do want to maybe expand my horizons so I'm thinking of giving some of the Heisei Godzilla films.

I think I was at the perfect age when MMPR hit the UK - so I've still got a soft spot for spandex-lad folks kicking people in fantastically terrible monster suits.

I've got all the Ultraman (Ultramen?) queued up on Crunchyroll at the mo, and am burning through Kamen Rider W thanks to a recommendation from Runglover. Also reading through the Kamen Rider manga.

'Proper' kaiju-wise, I've not seen much. Only the original Godzilla, and then the Broderick/Cranston ones. We bought Shin today, funnily enough, and should be watching it tomorrow after Black Panther!

I've been getting ridiculously into Super Sentai/Kamen Rider since early November and I've burned through so much in that time; in order:-

Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger
Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters
Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger
Ressha Sentai Toqger
Power Rangers RPM
Shuriken Sentai Ninninger
Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger
Kamen Rider Fourze
Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger
Kamen Rider ZO
Kamen Rider J

Aaaand I'm watching the current Sentai and Kamen Rider as well. Patoranger vs. Lupinranger has only had one episode so it's hard to judge; but I adore the concept and the first episode we've seen is pretty promising. I'd say they've got the thief theme nailed so well that they could totally have carried it with just the Phantom Thief stuff and not the vs. theme, but that's still a huge positive; it shows that going with the vs. theme means they're not sacrificing doing well on either side.
Kamen Rider Build is so much on its own level I don't even know where to begin. Gokaiger was my favourite Toku before this but Build has just managed to blow everything out of the water; it's... I honestly can't put it into words. It seems unfair to compare anything else I've seen to it because it's just so good. I love it!!

Aside from watching those two series as they come out I'm taking a break from marathoning through Toku because, well, I watched that many in a few months. I got a bit burnt out and there's only so much one can take of Sentai's repeating tropes after a while. Once I get back into it though my plan is to watch W > OOO > Gaim > Drive > Ex-Aid given the good things I've heard about each. Also everyone says Wizard and Ghost are bad, so...

W is fantastic, but also the first KR I've seen outside of the MMPR crossovers which seem to be completely different from the source material, at least judging from the manga. Very few dismemberments, for example!

MMPR crossovers? Do you mean 1995's Masked Rider?

Yeah! That was my first exposure as a kid, but didn't track it down beyond the crossovers. Then, I think I heard about vigilante motorbike rangers somewhere, and my brain latched on to it.

Any recommendations for super early Kamen Rider shows?

Shin was excellent! Hilarious levels of admin-porn and somehow managed to be genuinely funny at points, alongside the carnage.

What else would you recommend?

GMK sounds like it might be right up your alley, given what aspects you like about Shin, but giving you some extra monsters to enjoy. Actual English title being Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack.

The original Japanese film is also worthwhile given it starts everything and is a somber affair.

The original and Shin are the two movies I've seen, but have read most (all?) of the IDW stuff too.

Big fan of Ghidorah's design - will check out GMK, thanks!
